Acuity Achievers Club

Let me begin by saying that we have tried all three of the typical education systems available to us.  We have used private school, public school, and homeschooling full time. We do not have a favorite right now nor do we think one is the perfect system to use, but we have sure seen the benefits of all three.

Today I wanted to write about our public school system. We are in a really good school district.  Our high school is ranked #6 in Missouri. We have been so impressed with both our elementary and middle school we have used.  One of my favorite things about Line Creek Elementary is the staff there and the opportunities for extra staff to help our children succeed.  Because of Caleb's speech disorder and delay he had from age 2 to 6, we knew that he would need some special education classes in elementary school.  We have to report that Park Hill has done an AMAZING job in this area!!

One big advantage to the new Common Core curriculum implemented in our district is quarterly testing.  They are ensuring that each student stays up to speed in Math, Reading, and Writing each quarter.  Don't get me wrong, I am still against the government telling us what level each student in each district in each state needs to be at, but the levels they have implemented in this curriculum is still a little higher than what our private school and public district were doing before. I like that even though some do not.  Caleb was already a little behind at our private school, especially in reading and writing.  His test scores showed that with the first acuity test he took this year in 3rd grade.  But as soon as he didn't do well, they put asked if he could go into a Special Ed Reading class and a Reading club that meets after school two days a week.  We quickly said yes and his reading scored improved drastically by the second quarter test.

Now they are encouraging him to be in the Acuity Achievers club before school two days a week to help with his test taking skills.  We have always known he struggles with times tests and having to read a selection quickly with questions after.  This club is designed to teach them how to get through a problem in a timely matter and how they can discover the answers from the paragraphs in a timely and correct manner.  He is so excited for this club.  So are we, especially knowing these tests will be given each quarter through elementary school.  I always feel like they want him to succeed and do better there.  We LOVE his teacher and his reading teachers like they are part of our circle of friends.  His teacher often calls me at home to talk about how he is doing.

We can't say enough positive things about this school. We knew Caleb would have a few hard years before he would be "average" in his class and I have to say that sending him to public school has truly been the answer.  We look forward to partnering with this school again next year for Caleb!  He starts the Acuity Achievers Club in Feb and will be part of that 12 student group until the end of April.  I'll keep you posted on his progress as we go...
