Prequels: hard to understand at 4

a paraphrase of our conversation yesterday:

Joshua: Can we get Little Mermaid 3 from the library today?
Mom: Oh, Joshua, that isn't available at the library yet because it is so new. Remember we got that one from the Red Box when it came out a couple weeks ago.
Joshua: Not the Ariel's Beginning one - the one with Melody.
Mom: Oh, do you mean the Little Mermaid 2 where Ariel has a daughter.
Joshua: No, that is the Little Mermaid 3 because it comes last.
Ashlyn: No, Joshua. Ariel's Beginning comes before Little Mermaid 1, but it is NOT Little Mermaid 1.
Joshua: No, no, no. Listen. We own Little Mermaid 2 and I want to see Little Mermaid 3. We already saw 1 a little while ago.
Mom: Honey, we can go see if the library has Little Mermaid 2 today. But there really is no Little Mermaid 3. Disney made the Little Mermaid Prequel last, which comes before one.
Ashlyn: Joshua, there is no Little Mermaid 3 in the title of the new one - so it is just called Ariel's Beginning. You want to see Little Mermaid 2.
Mom: Sometimes movie people make the "first" movie to a series after the others are done. Like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. Remember how Star Wars Episode 4, 5 and 6 were made first. And the first 3 Lord of the Rings are done and know they are making the Hobbit prequel?
Joshua: No, no! You don't understand what I am saying. I want to see the one with Melody.
Ashlyn: Joshua you are not listening to mommy. The one you want to see is the Little Mermaid 2. Mom, just tell him we are going to get the one with Melody - he is crazy!
Mom: Joshua, let's go to the library and pick out the Little Mermaid you want to see. I like the 2nd one with Melody.
Joshua: Me too!
Ashlyn: Finally!

This should be titled "Prequels: hard to understand at 30"!!! I'm so confused!!!!! That's too funny...Josie and I have similar conversations but I"m usually the one trying to figure out what she's talking about because she totally knows!!! I love our precious children!

Okay, there are 3 Little Mermaid movies - Ariels Beginning (a prequel made in 2008), The Little Mermaid (the original), and The Little Mermaid 2 (w/ Melody, Ariels daughter). Joshua wanted to see Little Mermaid 2, but kept calling it Little Mermaid 3...he gave in when I said lets go get the 2nd one with Melody...probably because he kept wanting the one w/ Melody he he heard that instead of me saying the 2nd one. It drove Ashlyn crazy!
