School changes in 2014
We have always looked at each child each year to determine what education system we will use that school year. Ashlyn went to a private school K-5th grade where she went to school MWF, and then was home on Tues/Thurs. We homeschooled for 6th grade full time and she is currently loving public middle school for 7th grade.
Joshua attended the same private school from K through now. Caleb attended public school for K to help with Speech and then that same private school for 1st and 2nd. He is now loving the same public school he went to for Kindergarten this year for 3rd grade. He is done with Speech Therapy, but getting a tons of Reading help during and after school because of the delay caused by his Speech impediment.
We started Jonathan at the same public Caleb attended with every intention to send him to the private school like we did for Caleb in 1st grade. Because he was also receiving Speech Therapy there and because Caleb was going back there for 3rd, we decided to keep him there for 1st grade. Then we would decide where he would go for second grade later.
At the beginning of the school year, we started talking about what we are going to do next year. The private school we have been with for 8 years has changed quite a bit since we started. It is really growing and they are looking into moving soon or building to accommodate the growth. We really miss the smaller school we enjoyed when Ashlyn was there. Joshua's class is the first class to outgrow one teacher. Each year, our class has to divide up the kids into two classes, sometimes rotate between the two teachers, try to keep up the the same schedule/curriculum as the other class, and enjoy new teachers each year. For the most part, we have handled the change well. Second grade was our most challenging year. Most of his close friends were in the other class, and we were pretty sure we were not going to stay for third. But we did and enjoyed it. This year has started out alot like second grade. We had decided a few weeks ago to pull out in fifth grade to begin home school with Joshua. But after a couple rough weeks, we decided to pull him at semester instead. It was a difficult decision, but something we felt was right even after hearing there is a $500 withdrawal fee. It was a bittersweet day on Friday when we gathered all of his things and realized we no longer have children there. We are going to change the curriculum a little in January and are excited to plan it out during Christmas break. We have a few good friends who are already home schooling and plan to get together with them as well. Of course then benefit of only volunteering at two schools now instead of three is appealing. Not paying tuition for education is also huge. He is so smart and so easy to teach. That is another reason we have planned it this way. He is so much like Ashlyn and we enjoyed our year together so much last year!! I was secretly missing being a teacher all fall :) And now I have a workout partner again!
We are not sure what next fall will hold. I'm not sure what I will do with any of them, but would love another opportunity with a one-on-one interaction at home. I would eventually love to homeschool each of them at least for one year alone. I am so thankful for the places they are all going to be in January. What an adventure parenthood is! And what an honor it is to be able to choose the education we think is best for each of our children. I'll leave you with a picture of my hard working future student..I'm sure we will be posting alot about our adventure the next few months on here.
