Caleb's Evaluation Results

Caleb stopped Speech Therapy through the NKC School District back in March 2012 because the speech therapist we were seeing said that he had all his age appropriate sounds at that time.  We were a little surprised because we could still hear some errors every now and again, but knew the NKC school district would only provide free speech therapy if it was pretty bad.

So we started this school with no scheduled speech therapy and a very happy Caleb.  We didn't pay for any over the summer either, which we have done the past 5 years each summer.  When we had out second grade parent/teacher conference, our favorite second grade teacher at Faith Christian Academy asked us to get him re-tested for Speech.  Her biggest concern was reading because she said he was focusing so much on saying the correct sound in each phonogram that he was completely missing what he was reading or saying.  Therefore, his reading comprehension was so behind. She could hear a lot of speech errors too, which we would hear sometimes too, but knew it still wasn't bad enough for the free NKC speech therapy.  So she requested he get re-evaluated with NKC again.  We started the process back in Oct.  Because we knew the Special Education Coordinator with NKC well after all the speech testing we had done the fall before, she knew our background with Caleb and had all his records, and was interested in doing a FULL evaluation with him.  When I say, full, I really mean 8 Speech evaluations, a Psychological evaluation, a learning disability test, classroom evaluation at FCA, and multiple questionnaires and forms to fill out....

Everyone was very kind through the process, but we spent many hours running to and from different schools for tests.  Caleb was just about to cry at his last test, when she said she was finally all done.  We met with a whole group of people last Tuesday to get his results....he is average on all tests given.  He does not have a learning disability, has all of his age appropriate sounds, except R which is an 8 year old sound so he couldn't work on that until after April 4th, and has a wonderful memory.  So we do not qualify for any assistance through NKC.  We knew this would probably happen, but are excited to receive copies of all the tests they performed in case we decide to pay for help or go through our school district next year.

So after this long explaination, the final conclusion, according to NKC School District, is that Caleb no longer needs Speech Therapy!!  He was very excited!

That's great! We had a similar problem with Aaron when he transitioned into Kindergarten this year. He had to be re-tested and his preschool speech therapist warned us he might not qualify anymore, although she still felt he needed it. She was right and he didn't qualify after he was evaluated by the school therapist. Luckily she could also see that he would still benefit from therapy and gave me the choice of whether to continue or not. I still really feel like he NEEDS the speech therapy, so we kept him in it. Maybe try again in a year or two with Caleb if you still think he might need it...as they get older, more is required of them and if they aren't developing as quickly, they can qualify again. =)

I'm glad you guys are still getting speech for Aaron. Caleb had speech for 5 straight years. I know he is so much better because we did so much speech when he was younger. That will help a tons! Hope you are all doing well on the East coast :)
